The Mauritius Council of Social Service (MACOSS) is planning to start on a one week campaign for raising public awareness about the importance of politeness on the road.

The objective is to improve the manners of all road users across the island. The project is still near the beginning stage but should be implemented by July.

Denis Grandport, chairman of MACOSS, stressed that now, with the increasing number of drivers, it is important to follow the basic rules of civility on the road since it can prevent accidents or quarrel between drivers.

Grandport added that the situation was very upsetting because of the increasing number of accidents on our roads.

He also said: “More courtesy on the road has several advantages. It decreases stress and therefore improves safety on the road and reduces the number of accidents.”

As part of the national campaign, brochures will be distributed among drivers explaining the drive and advice will also be given.

Grandport also supposed that the MACOSS would organise discussions in different primary schools, colleges and tertiary institutions across the island.

Moreover MACOSS is targeting popular places such as taxi parking areas and big transport companies as these drivers use roads regularly and have to set the right example.
