2 killed on pedestrian crossings
The police are actively seeking a resident of Roche Brunes who is suspected of running over a sexagenarian who was crossing the road at a pedestrian crossing in Beau Bassin on Sunday morning.

Investigators have questioned the driver’s friend who was with him at the time of the accident. He told the police that the suspect was drunk while he was driving and that is the reason why he drove away when he hit the victim.

The police went to look for the suspect at his residence at Roche Brunes but he was not there. While his friend was released on parole, investigators said his arrest is imminent.

A similar incident occurred 30 minutes later around 500 metres from the first accident spot. A 70-year-old woman was hit by a car while she was on a pedestrian crossing.

The victim was rushed to Dr AG Jeetoo hospital but died shortly after. The driver will be charged under a provisional charge of manslaughter at Rose Hill court on Monday.

The two autopsies were performed by chief police medical officer Dr Sudesh Kumar Gungadin who attributed the deaths due to multiple injuries.
