Roads claim 87 lives since January
According to the information gathered from the Traffic Branch, from January to July, there were 71 fatal accidents, last year 78 accidents were registered during the same period.

Though a decrease has been noted in the number of fatal accidents on the roads the number of deaths is higher. During the first seven months of this year, 87 people were killed in road accidents while in 2010 for the same period, the figure stood at 82.

According to the Traffic Branch an increase of 6 per cent has been noted.

It is mainly pedestrians who are the victims. Since the beginning of this year, 30 pedestrians died, last year during the same period where there were 31 victims.

As for the drivers, they were 10 in 2011, five passengers and finally 24 motorcyclists died in road accidents.

A senior official working at the Traffic Branch stated that the police is continuing its various control operations on the roads every day, The police registered 20 road accidents between 6 a.m. to noon since January. While from noon to 6 p.m., 19 fatal accidents were recorded.

Due to less visibility on roads, the traffic Branch is currently conducting various awareness campaigns.
