Violent acts hamper construction works
Deputy prime minister Dr Rashid Beebeejaun, minister of Public Infrastructure, National Development Unit, Land Transport and Shipping Anil Bachoo, Dr Abu Kasenally, minister of Housing and Lands, PPS Abdullah Hossen and officers of the National Development Unit (NDU) and Road Development Unit (RDA) conducted a site visit in constituency no 2, Port Louis South and Port Louis Central on Tuesday.

Three main regions of the constituency, namely Vallée Pitot, Bangladesh and Ward 4, where construction works are being done or will be undertaken to embellish the place, were visited.

Violence against building contractors was identified as one of the main problems, causing delays. “It has been noted that some masked men are assaulting builders and a foreman has even been admitted to the hospital. Contractors are hesitating to come forward as they fear for their safety,” said Dr Beebeejaun.

The deputy prime minister appealed to the police of the region to give a helping hand to avoid such a situation. “We visited some places where there is an urgent need to address the problem. It does not mean we are neglecting other regions,” he highlighted.

Some of the places that were visited include Galdermar Street, Canal Bissoon, La Rue Pelt and Drain Kalymaye at La Rue Justice.

The minister of Public Infrastructure pointed out that the construction work is progressing except for a few incidents.

“Around Rs 80 to 85 million has been earmarked in the budget to carry out construction projects in these regions. We expect these works to be completed by the end of the year,” explained Bachoo.

He also mentioned that if everything goes on well, other projects such as road asphalting or drainage system will be started next year. PPS Hossen underlined that they are working in close collaboration with the municipal councils, NDU and RDA to undertake important construction works with the aim of beautifying these regions further.
