For years, automakers have been talking about replacing mirrors with cameras for improved safety and fuel economy (door mirrors catch a lot of wind).

GM and Cadillac were the first to really push forward with the technology with the Rear Camera Mirror in the CT6. That technology has trickled to other products, including the Bolt EV and the all-new 2018 Chevy Traverse. For 2018, Nissan has joined the party with its own version of the same technology, the Intelligent Rear View Mirror.

The I-RVM comes standard on the $59,885 Nissan Armada Platinum. The Armada is the first Nissan to get the new camera mirror, though it will eventually trickle down to other products. Like in GM's vehicles, the rear view mirror can be used either like normal or as a high definition LCD display. A camera mounted to the Armada's rear sends a video feed to the display while a toggle just under the mirror changes from one setting into the other. The screen's ratio is about 4:1 compared to most modern televisions which have a screen ratio of 16:9.

While it may take some time to get used to the different reference points, the camera can be quite useful when the vehicle is loaded down with people or cargo that would normally block the mirror's view. In an SUV as large as the Armada, this will be a huge help when navigating parking spots.

Along with the new I-RVM, Nissan has made some other changes for 2018. NissanConnect Services is now standard equipment across the board. This includes an eight-inch touchscreen and three years of access to SiriusXM Travel Link. Voice recognition, hands-free text messaging and three more USB ports are also standard.

Prices have increased by $700 for the $46,795 Armada SV and $51,545 SL, while the $60,155 Armada Platinum gets a price bump of $1,100. Four-wheel drive is a $2,900 premium across the board. All models come with a 390 horsepower 5.6-liter V8 and a 7-speed automatic transmission.
