2020 Land Rover Defender 90 Convertible Looks Amazing, Too Bad It’s A Rendering
If you were hoping for the return of the convertible Defender, it’s been all in vain.

Land Rover doesn't even plan to make a pickup truck based on the all-new Defender, and that's a bit saddening if you remember that Jeep offers the Wrangler and Gladiator with multiple roof options.

X-Tomi Design had a go at imagining the 90 with a soft top, right after the Hungarian pixel artist tried his hands at the workhorse-bodied version of the short-wheelbase Defender. There's no denying this particular rendering looks a lot better than the Range Rover Convertible does in real life, mostly thanks to the boxy proportions of the off-road sport utility vehicle.

Truth be told, the 2020 Land Rover Defender is a very different animal from the previous generation and the Series family before it. The designers went forward with more SUV and less off-roader in the truest sense of the word, but to the surprise of everyone, this fellow here promises world-class capability off the beaten path and more on-road comfort than ever before.

You could call the 2020 model year a compromise, one that tries its best to keep the purists happy while attracting new customers to the Defender. In a sense, it's the perfect step up from the Discovery in the Land Rover lineup as long as you specify the 130 body style for maximum accommodation.

Land Rover wouldn't have too much trouble developing a full-length fabric roof instead of a folding mechanism as it's the case with the Evoque, but so far, the automaker's research hasn't returned any positive results as far as demand is concerned. There's no denying things could change in a few years' time, but for the time being, a fixed metal roof will have to suffice.
