Recently spied testing in Germany, the all-new Pajero Sport is due to arrive in dealer showrooms next year. The fourth generation of the body-on-frame sport utility vehicle with seating for up to seven is twinned with the latest incarnation of the Triton, a mid-size pickup that is called L200 in Europe.

The Pajero Sport is also known under different monikers, with Mitsubishi using Shogun Sport in the United Kingdom and Montero Sport in other markets. Those who can recall the Montero Sport of the early 2000s may also remember that Mitsubishi replaced the US model with the front-biased Endeavor mid-size crossover SUV.

Closely resembling the Triton up front, the all-new Pajero Sport features a ladder frame chassis with improved torsional rigidity. Mitsubishi claims 60 percent more torsional rigidity for the redesigned pickup truck, which also grew in overall length and width by 15 and 50 millimeters, respectively.

Out back, the heavily camouflaged prototype features triangular taillights that hark back to the pizza-pie Lancers of the 1990s. We can also see a lone exhaust outlet, as well as a shiny tow hitch ball the electrical socket. Devoid of a fuel cap, the pictured Pajero Sport also features camouflage on its wheels.

As far as the cabin is concerned, interior updates will include a new touchscreen infotainment system with a 9-inch display. Similar to the Triton, there will be physical controls for the likes of temperature control, fan speed, volume, and satellite navigation. Unfortunately, prospective customers can further look forward to plenty of gloss-black plastic garnish on the center console.

Under the hood, the rear- and four-wheel-drive sport utility vehicle is most certainly getting a selection of 2.4-liter mills connected to either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission. The Triton's least exciting powerplant is a four-pot naturally aspirated gasser from the 46G family.

Those in the market for a torquier engine will be presented with a choice of two diesels, namely single- and twin-turbo versions of the 4N16. Said lump delivers anything from 150 to 204 metric horsepower or 148 to 201 mechanical horsepower. As for the gasoline-drinking engine, make that 130 hp.

430 Newton-meters or 317 pound-feet is the most you can expect from the spicier turbo diesel. Four-wheel-drive systems are believed to comprise Super Select 4WD-II and Easy Select 4WD. The former uses a center torque-sensing LSD that channels 40 percent of the torque to the front axle. Both systems boast 4L modes, although Super Select 4WD-II has the upper hand. The 4LLc setting not only locks the center differential with lower gears, but further provides Rock mode.

The Pajero Sport's main rivals are the Ranger-based Ford Everest and Hilux-based Toyota Fortuner, two extremely popular SUVs in the Asia-Pacific region. Hearsay suggests that the 2026 model's world premiere is scheduled for the second half of 2025.
