Many times has been said about the damage that drunk driving causes. Alcohol causes tremendously serious and even fatal accidents. Since the beginning of this year more than 1,000 drivers have positive test for the alcohol.
“Operation “Crackdown” will be intensified. Units of the Special Mobile Force and the regular police will be deployed in greater numbers in the field. Besides speeding, drunk driving, we would sanction any rude behavior of drivers”, warns the inspector Ashok Mathar from the Traffic Branch.
It worth to admit that since the beginning of this year, about 131 fatal accidents were recorded and 138 people were killed. The first place victims are pedestrians, with 51 fatalities. Then the most vulnerable are drivers and passengers of motorcycles.
December is month of holidays of all kinds where alcohol flows freely, the inspector Ashok Mathar insists to appoint somebody as the 'bobs' at these evenings. They must stay clear-headed throughout the evening because those who are under the influence of alcohol unfit to driving.
Note that test is positive when a level of alcohol is 50 mg per 100 ml of blood and there is no way to reduce the level of alcohol in the blood. Only time can bring it down if, of course, stop to drink.
By the law there are severe punishments for those who drive with high levels of alcohol in the blood. For a first violation (verified with positive test) the driver must pay a fine ranging from Rs 10,000 to Rs 25,000 with the possibility of being imprisoned for a period up to six months. If the driver is found guilty for a second time, the fine varies from Rs 20,000 to Rs 50,000 and followed by a sentence of 6 to 12 months in prison. For a third time where there is loss of life, the fine is Rs 25,000 to Rs 50,000 and imprisonment up to three years.
Police report that number of checkpoints will be increased this season.
