Ashok Leyland seeks joint venture at Mauritius
Indian vehicle manufacturer Ashok Leyland Ltd wants to strengthen its foothold in Mauritius and is prospecting a joint venture to set up a business unit on the island. Mr Anthony Lobo, Director of Operations of the Indian giant, has had talks with prospective local investors and also with the Board of Investment.

According to information received from the business community, the Indian manufacturer is ready to open an office here and is awaiting a response from local operators. Mr Lobo formed part of the business delegation which accompanied the Indian President, Mrs Pratibha Patil, on her recent state visit.

He participated in various workshops with local investors organised jointly by the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development and the Board of Investment.

He said during a speech at the India Mauritius Business Meet that Ashok Leyland Ltd was the first Indian private sector company to have come to Mauritius. “We have been present in Mauritius for more than 30 years and we wish to reinforce our presence here.” Mr Lobo said Mauritius will be used as a platform to reach the emerging markets in Africa.

As far as the local market is concerned, sources close to the Board of Investment said Ashok Leyland is planning to have a representative in Mauritius which will be responsible for the promotion of the Indian brand. Ashok Leyland then plans to offer after-sales service to its local customers.
