BMW Recalls Motorcycles that Could Fall Over Unexpectedly

While it is possible for a falling motorcycle to injury the rider or bystanders, it is almost certain to wound the rider’s ego.

In a document filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the company said the side-stand bolts may loosen due to a manufacturing flaw, and as a result the stand can separate from the motorcycle’s frame. The problem affects 2,385 bikes built from September 2011 through December 2012.

Under the recall BMW dealers will clean the side-stand mounting plate threads and replace the side-stand mounting plate bolts, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin next month.

This isn’t the first safety problem for the high-performance, 193-horsepower, $15,000 BMW super sport bike. The company recalled certain S 1000 RR models last spring for engine flaws that could result in failures from ”thrown rods.”
