Does Key-Chain Clutter Hurt Your Car’s Ignition?
“Me & My Car” is a weekly question and answer column that invites readers’ inquiries about buying, driving and maintaining their vehicles. Here is what some of them were thinking about this week:

Q: My keys are attached to a copper bottle opener. Should I be concerned at all about the additional weight hanging down from the starter column in my 2006 Forester?

—Lukas Johnson, Plymouth, Minn.

A: Extra weight swinging back and forth and putting pressure on the ignition-key cylinder certainly increases wear. While people have long debated whether the added mechanical stress matters, I think you should declutter your key chain because ignition cylinders can be surprisingly fragile and a worn one can keep you from starting your vehicle.

Many experts agree this is a real problem including those at the state of Maine’s risk-management division.
