The Ford Mustang GT4 is ready to take on racers worldwide
Ford just unveiled its newest ready-to-race Mustang, called the Mustang GT4, at the SEMA show.

It's built to GT4 class specifications, and is legal to compete in any series that allows cars of that class. Among the different series that allow GT4 cars are the IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge, Pirelli World Challenge and the GT4 European Series.

The Mustang GT4 itself is based on the GT350R-C that won this year's Grand Sport class in the Continental Tire series. Both feature the 5.2-liter flat-plane crank V8 from the Shelby GT350. But instead of the Shelby's traditional manual, a six-speed sequential transmission from Holinger is fitted. The chassis and suspension get tweaks from Multimatic Motorsports, including new shocks, lower rear control arms and anti-roll bars. The body gets a a large rear wing and front splitter, different hood vents and a new rear diffuser. Inside, drivers will be protected by an FIA-certified roll cage. Ford also includes an ABS controller and a data logger from Motec.

With the Mustang now eligible to race in GT4 class series, Ford will be going up against a wide array of competitors including Aston Martin, Porsche, and even KTM in the GT4 European Series, and Chevrolet, Maserati and Nissan in the Pirelli World Challenge. Ford won't be the only company selling factory-prepped cars either, since BMW will offer the M4 GT4 race car, and Mercedes-AMG will start selling a GT4 version of the GT sports car.
