New parking lot raises controversy

A new municipal building, creation of green spaces, beautification campaign, new location for the bus station and new multi-purpose sports complexes are among the projects that mayor Nooranee Allyboccus, has given the green light to. 

However, not everyone is happy with the changes that the town of Vacoas will soon experience. The traders of this town believe that these changes will cause disruption in their works.

“The changes will be in three phases, namely construction, restructuration and beautification. Works for sewer pipes and pavements will soon begin and green spaces will be built. This means that motorists will not be allowed to park their vehicles before the shops. Even delivery trucks will have to park on the new lot which the muncipality will soon build,” said K Sewruttun, a trader.

According to him, this will not be in their favour. “We are not against construction but the mayor must think that this will cause a problem for the clients as they will have to park their cars away from the shops and walk all the way back to the shops,” he said.

He highlighted that a letter has been sent to the municipal council two weeks back but there has been no response.

However, for the mayor, the new parking will be a good thing. “The new parking lot would be big and could accommodate some 88 cars,” he said.

Commenting on the other projects, he said that the work concerning the new municipal building is nearly completed.

“So far 75 per cent of the work have been completed and we are expecting the building to be ready by September,” he said.

Concerning the new location of the bus station, Allyboccus said that this would be done by the end of the year. The bus station will be relocated near the offices of the Ministry of Public Infrastructures.
