11,246 accidents recorded for the first six months of the year. Against 10,662 in the corresponding period last year. An increase of 5.5%. This is indicated by the Road Transport and Road Traffic Accident Statistics, which covers the period from January to June 2013. This report was published on Thursday, August 29. According to Statistics Mauritius, 82 people died on the road, against 69 for the first half of 2012.
Of 11,246 accidents this year, 9979 (88.7%) were not injured. But 67 accidents were fatal, 206 caused serious injuries and 994 minor injuries. The number of casualties (dead and injured) was down 2% from 1792 in 2012 to 1756 in the last six months.
Statistics Mauritius also notes that the number of accidents resulting in injury fell by 1.4%, while there is an increase of 6.4% of those who have no injuries. There is also a 4.7% increase in fatal accidents and 1.2% of those with some minor injuries. In the cases which have been seriously injured, they were down 13.8%.
The number of vehicles (motorized or not) involved in road accidents accused, meanwhile, increased by 5.6%. It is 21,853 for the first six months of the year, against 20,690 for the same period last year.
The number of motor vehicles involved in accidents with injuries is 1815 against 1856 last year, a decrease of 2.2%. It appears that 33.7% of these vehicles were cars master, 40.1% of motorcycles and mopeds and 11.2% of vans.
And 90 cases of hit and run were reported from January to June, against 88 for the same period in 2012.
