Taxi Boss has Rs5.5m 'Fines' Tab
South Africa- A Durban taxi owner has taken only two years to accumulate more than 4000 traffic prosecution notices with a possible penalty total of R1.6-million (around Rs 5,55m).

Kenneth Melvin Oliver, 48, spoke to the Sunday Times about the problem and faces picking up the tab for the drivers of his 10 taxis.

Worst offenders

Oliver also reportedly owes R40 000 (Rs 1,38m) in penalties for violations involving his private cars, one of them a Jaguar XF 3.0D.

According to the Times, the eThekwini metro police named him as one of its 20 worst offenders.

Oliver believes his drivers should be held liable. He could be right...

"People must understand that drivers come and go," he said. "A driver will work for a few days or weeks and then be gone."
