Theft of vehicles: cars considered "Total Loss" reused

The modus operandi of car thieves is simple. They buy low-priced cars categorized as 'total loss' in public auctions. It is even possible to have a damaged car with Rs 5000. After purchase, they become the owner of a vehicle. Subsequently, they stole another car and replace the chassis number by that of the damaged car.

Investigators are appealing to the authorities concerned because nobody wants to accept some responsibility in this matter. Insurance companies say they have the right to sell these cars were damaged. "What shall we do with these cars completely damaged that the repair may cost more than buying a new one?"

An officer of the National Transport Authority says it is not their responsibility to monitor sales of cars damaged and that the body is not able to know if cars were modified with stolen cars. Furthermore, legally, the NTA is not authorized to take action in regard to the sale of these cars.
