Trade unionists are turning to the Minister Mohamed after "indifference" of Bachoo

"For us, Anil Bachoo failed! "This is how qu'Haniff Peerun, the president of the Mauritius Labour Congress (MLC), was speaking at a press briefing Tuesday, July 26 at the headquarters of the union. He justifies this statement in response to several letters addressed to the Minister of Public Infrastructure which, he said, remained unanswered.

"For us the situation is serious. There are many problems in the transport sector. Minister Bachoo consideration clearly shows that its workers ignoring us," says he. The President added that the last letter to Anil Bachoo was addressed in the course of last week.

Several issues were raised both in the letter to Anil Bachoo and the press conference this Tuesday, July 26. The union regretted the government's decisions in the transport sector, without consultation with them, they refer in particular to decisions on permits-to-point, the Bus way, number plates or free transportation for school children.

The President of MLC maintains that there is a lack of tripartite dialogue in the field of transport. “As for the penalty point I think it is not enough to implement measures to bail out the state but must educate the public. And consult with workers before making decisions,” says the chairman of the MLC.

Thus, it is to the Minister of Labour that the unionists are turning to find solutions to their problems. "Yesterday I met Mohamed Shakeel and I told him the grievances of workers in the transport sector. We have already sent a letter and assured that he took charge of the case. He even suggested to send a list of our demands," says the union Peerun.

Chotoye Yusuf, president of the Transport Workers, claims, in turn, greater security for employees’ buses. He wants the Police Commissioner ordered that the stations are monitored at night to prevent drivers or bus conductors are victims of aggression.

Minister Shakeel Mohamed says that one of its officers working in fact on this issue. But he argues that he has "never asked for a list of demands and that he never met with the transport union in an official capacity."

"My department has received the letter and met the president of the MLC to a function. I am willing to meet with the union but I never asked to list of demands. How could I have done it without having met them?" said Minister of Labour.
