US: Drivers Seek Passengers to Meet HOV Standards

“Going to the city?” is heard shouted from cars lacking of passengers.

Jim Yohe, 69, art dealer. Has a place upstate and on Myrtle Avenue in Brooklyn. Yohe left his Brooklyn home with empty seats this morning — but he had a plan.

“My inspiration was to stop at this hotel here (the Marriott on Adams St.) that’s where I found her,” Yohe said pointing at a woman in the back seat.

“I just wanted to get over the bridge too,” said Suzette Liverpool. “Anyone going to Manhattan?” she shouted out the backseat at a group of people headed towards the bridge. By the time

Yohe and Liverpool made it a 1/2 a block the car was completely full. Five strangers that all happened to work in lower Manhattan were nestled in the warm SUV together with smiles on their faces.

Before filling up his car with people Yohe was actually more worried about filling up at the pump. “I think this was an inspired idea to mandate carpooling but I think the fact that we’re all going to run out of gas might solve the problem itself.”
