In a one-two punch to show other OEMs how it's done, Yamaha proves it runs the town by following up Neon White with Legend Blue.

By now, one thing you should know about me is that I love a perfectly applied retro livery on a perfectly designed modern retro bike. So naturally, I was all over the 2024 Yamaha XSR900 GP when it was first announced for the European market, only to have my heart broken soon after upon learning that we wouldn't be getting it in the US.

The pain only got worse when Yamaha Europe announced a lower fairing package (seriously crying buckets over here), to be followed by two more knife twists with the introduction of the Mamola Edition and via perhaps the biggest kick in the face, the 'King' Kenny Roberts edition in 2025.

But in a move that was long overdue, in August 2026, Yamaha US finally (FINALLY) announced that the XSR900 GP would paddle its way to our shores. At the time of writing, it's not yet listed on the Yamaha US website, but the similarly recently-announced-for-our-market Ténéré 700 World Raid is there, so it should only be a matter of time before it makes its official appearance on the website.

Why all the preamble? Because Yamaha Europe had the absolute audacity to not even let us get back up off the ground after dropping the Neon White XSR900 livery on us. Just one day later, it delivered a true aesthetic knockout blow with its latest historically-derived livery for the XSR900 GP, the deceptively simply-named Legend Blue.

Featuring an instantly iconic blue livery with yellow color blocks on the rear cowl and the front fairing, it effortlessly channels the Gauloises racing livery of '80s French GP legend Christian Sarron. The shape of the tank and the knee cutouts works wonderfully well with this paint scheme, creating all kinds of visual interest with the way light and shadow play across the body of the bike. The light blue blocks toward the bottom of the front cowl, split apart from the dark blue by a thin yellow stripe, provide just the right visual break to accentuate the whole of this composition.

Now, because Yamaha US has yet to update its webpage with the XSR900 GP particulars for the colorway(s) we're getting, I have to wonder: What can we expect to see show up Stateside? And will this lovely thing be among them? I mean, there are no bad colorways here, as far as I'm concerned.

For riders in Europe, who are most assuredly getting this Legend Blue as an available colorway, you should also know that Legend Yellow is planned to stick around and keep it company. Pricing will vary by region, so be sure to check with your local Yamaha dealer to find the most accurate information for your area.
