In a document filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Yamaha said the recall affects about 8,700 scooters it built from July 2008 to April 2009. The company said possible improper clearances of parts inside the fuel pump could restrict the fuel supply, which could cause the scooter to stall in traffic.
NHTSA said in November it was investigating complaints that the scooters stall unexpectedly.
Under the recall Yamaha dealers will replace the fuel pump with a newly designed version. The recall is expected to begin later this month.
