2012 Chevrolet Sonic Bungee Jumps in Publicity Stunt
LONG BEACH, California — An unoccupied 2012 Chevrolet Sonic bungee-jumped 10 stories in a publicity stunt by the automaker.

"We want the Sonic to do a lot of firsts," explained Matt Scarlett, Chevrolet advertising manager, in a video of the stunt.

The stunt kicked off last weekend, with everyone who came to the Web site LetsDoThis.com inching the Sonic a bit farther off the platform. Chevrolet said more than 2.4 million clicks launched the Sonic — as it relies heavily on social media to launch the car.

A tower of shipping containers provided the platform for the launch. The Sonic splashed down into a large wading pool near an oversized Chevy bow-tie logo.

The stunt is part of a new advertising campaign for the car that includes the giveaway of a Sonic in a sweepstakes called "The Game of Firsts."

Participants in the contest are urged to do "a first," such as "bake a cake that looks like you — and eat yourself" or work out in a grocery store.

The contest's fine print warns against doing anything "sexually explicit" or that promotes "alcohol, illegal drugs or firearms." Participants are also warned not to do anything "that may appear unsafe or dangerous" or "promotes any particular political agenda."

Don't try this at home.
