Rumors and spy shots show that BMW is already working on a Life Cycle Impulse (LCI) refresh for the G60 5 Series. But according to one report, BMW's update for the midsize luxury sedan has been delayed.
Bimmerpost forum user "ynguldyn" keeps an updated list of upcoming BMW vehicles based on internal BMW sourcing. Their update to the post for June 2025 notes the arrival date for the LCI G60 5 Series refresh has been pushed back from March 2027 to July 2027. It's not exactly a huge delay, but it could be enough to bump it back an entire model year. If July 2027 proves to be accurate, the updated 5er would most likely be a 2028 model-year vehicle for America.
BMW is switching over to a new look with its Neue Klasse vehicles. The fresh design largely ditches the big, polarizing kidney grilles for a more unified grille and lighting structure. Spy shots of the updated 5 Series in testing show what appears to be an altered front fascia, making that exact change. It's tough to tell what's going on with the rear fascia due to all the masking and camouflage. But the sheer amount of it points to modest changes at the back that go beyond a new set of taillights. A tweaked rear fascia is a distinct possibility.
Zooming in through the windows is difficult at best, but we see covers on the dash that suggest interior updates are coming. One significant change may be the introduction of new infotainment technology and screens. The new 5 Series will switch over to BMW's new Panoramic iDrive system with Operating System X, which debuted at CES 2025 in January.
New elements may include a panoramic vision display across the dashboard and a 3D HUD display with augmented reality features. Drivers should also be able to customize the new central display and drag widgets to the panoramic vision display. The report also says that BMW will offer a new, optional passenger screen.
The 5 Series already makes maximal use of BMW's hybrid CLAR architecture with four- and six-cylinder gas versions available. There's also the plug-in hybrid and all-electric i5 variants. The report doesn't note any powertrain changes for combustion or PHEV models, but changes might come to the i5 with a new 50 model. It could offer rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive options that slot between the base 40 model (i5 eDrive40 and i5 xDrive40) and the i5 M60.
As for the BMW M5, it's safe to assume similar updates will follow in 2028. Whether BMW makes any changes to the super sedan's supremely powerful (and heavy) plug-in hybrid V8 powertrain remains to be seen. It sends 717 horsepower to the ground, but it's also saddled with a curb weight of 5,390 pounds. We wouldn't be surprised if BMW sheds a few calories from the M5's diet between now and then.
