Bruce Lee Provides Punch For M4 Gts' Water Injection In New Ad

A new BMW ad from China uses the beautiful words of Bruce Lee as the perfect way to showcase the power of the M4 GTS' water injection system. The spot takes excerpts from a classic interview with the martial arts icon where he explains the power of water to both flow and crash.

The Bosch-derived water injection system in the M4 GTS sprays a fine mist of water into the intake manifold. The liquid vaporizes, which cools the chamber and allows the turbo to run at higher boost. The tech allows the 3.0-liter biturbo inline-six engine to produce 494 horsepower (368 kilowatts) and 442 pound-feet (600 Newton meters) of torque. When the 1.3-gallon (5.0-liter) tank runs out, the powerplant's computer dials back the power output, until the owner refills it. BMW estimates the water should last around 1,800 miles (2,896 kilometers) between refills.

BMW sold just 803 units of the M4 GTS to customers, plus 27 more of them for promotional purposes. In addition to the power upgrade, engineers shaved off 137 pounds (62 kilograms) from the standard model, which brings weight down to 3,329 pounds (1,510 kg). The coupe gets to 62 miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour) in 3.8 seconds and to a top speed of 190 mph (305 km/h).

The ad communicates the system's benefits by showing an M4 GTS sliding in slow motion through shallow water. By kicking up huge rooster tails, the spot gives power to Lee's words.

BMW and Bosch intend to roll out the water-injection system to less exclusive models eventually. The company intends to use the tech for improving fuel economy and lowering CO2 emissions.
