The compact crossover/SUV segment has different sub-segments globally, and in North America, soft-roaders like the Honda CR-V and the Toyota RAV4 are popular. Even though a Jeep would be very different from a Honda or a Hyundai, there will certainly be some level of competition between them as they fall in the same price segment.
‘Jeep 551’ is the internal codename of the upcoming compact crossover, which is also known as the ‘Jeep C-SUV’. Spy shots suggest that the Jeep 551 will look like a smaller version of the Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Jeep 551 will be the second generation model of either the Jeep Compass or the Jeep Patriot, and be based on the Fiat 500X and the Jeep Renegade‘s small-wide front-wheel drive platform.
Expected to be one of the most globally focused Jeep models, the Jeep C-SUV will be available in both left-hand drive and right-hand drive versions. Reports say that two engines will be offered: ~164 hp 2.0-liter Tigershark petrol and ~170 hp 2.0-liter MultiJet II diesel, mated to 6-speed manual or 9-speed automatic transmission.
The Jeep C-SUV will be unveiled at the Sao Paulo International Motor Show in November. It will be built in Brazil first for the domestic and many global markets, and India will get the right-hand drive version made locally, rolling out of the Tata-Fiat JV plant in Ranjangaon, Maharashtra, beginning next year.
