Mini Got Infected By The Subaru Wilderness Bug, And A 'Rugged' New Countryman Is The Result

However, the company is taking advantage of the popularity of other brands that offer tougher versions of their machines for rock crawling by teasing a meaner Countryman.

A Countryman In The Rocky Mountains

Mini released a gallery of photos showing the still-unnamed special edition Countryman tackling the Rocky Mountains. The company reports that "the vehicle is currently being subjected to conditions that challenge its capabilities in demanding real-world scenarios."

Unfortunately, Mini isn't yet indicating what it's altering for this special edition Countryman. Judging from the photos, a tuned suspension provides a taller ride height. There are also all-terrain tires that wrap around John Cooper Works-branded wheels with V-shaped spokes.

There's an extra accessory taking up a prominent spot on the roof. There are no labels on it, but we believe this is a roof-mounted tent. It could also be a storage box, but the shape would limit the height of any items that owners put inside. Because Mini is showing this part in the teaser photos, we can expect it to be part of the production car's package.

The Countryman in the teaser photos wears a blue-and-white camouflage wrap with a blocky pattern. The front bumper seems to come from the existing Countryman. At the back, there's a cutout exposing a spot for a trailer hitch.

There's no indication of any powertrain changes. The base Countryman comes with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder making 241 horsepower, and the JCW version packs a 2.0-liter turbo producing 312 hp. Both of them use a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox and come with Mini's All4 all-wheel-drive system.

None of the photos show the special edition model's cabin. Based on the exterior, we wouldn't expect extensive alterations. The company might add rugged elements, such as thick all-weather floor mats to collect mud and rocks during off-road adventures.

A Long Time Coming

Mini has been working on more rugged versions of the Countryman for a while. For example, it built the 2021 Countryman Powered by X-Raid as a road-going take on its Dakar-winning rally car. The machine included a 1.6-inch suspension lift, an upgraded wheel-tire package, and a revised body kit. There was also the Untamed Edition that came with a roof-mounted tent and Grabber AT3 tires. In 2024, Michael Peyton, then vice president of Mini of the Americas, hinted that another off-road-oriented Countryman would eventually happen.
