Mitsubishi Brings Back GLX-R Nameplate to All-New Triton in the Australia
The Mitsubishi Triton or Mitsubishi L200 is a mid-size pickup truck produced since 1978 and bearing many other names during that time. It was also known as the Forte, Strada, Rodeo, Colt, Storm, Magnum, and even Strakar.

However, most importantly – it was also marketed by Mitsubishi in the United States in the past as the Mighty Max (until 2002), while Chrysler sold captive imports as the Dodge D50, Dodge Ram 50, and Plymouth Arrow truck or the Chrysler D-50 in Australia. Lord knows that Mitsubishi could use a pickup truck in its US lineup now, but it seems that's not going to happen.

At least the Land Down Under doesn't have to worry about missing out on the Mitsubishi Triton action, and the sixth generation was introduced quite recently, last summer. However, the Japanese automaker seeks to keep things extra fresh and is now premiering an intermediate 2024.5MY specification with upgrades and featuring the return of the popular GLX-R nameplate to further expand the Dual Cab family.

Mitsubishi Motors Australia Limited (MMAL) decided it's the ripe time to announce the return of the Triton GLX-R nameplate "featuring a distinct visual identity and value-packed specification list." It is based on the GLX model and is offered as a Dual Cab Utility model, packing the six-speed automatic transmission hooked to a 4x4 drivetrain featuring a lockable rear differential. There's also Super Select II 4WD with Drive Mode Terrain Control System, just like on the more expensive GLS and GSR trims.

The new GLX-R adds the standard duty suspension layout from the latter two but has a distinctive personality thanks to the addition of black 18-inch alloy wheels, a black sports bar, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, carpeted floors, a side-step delete, and fresh exterior door body moldings. A new dual strut tailgate assist system debuts Triton GLX-R and will be offered on the GLS and GSR "in the coming weeks."

"All-New Triton has delivered on its promise: It is the best Triton we have ever offered," said MMAL CEO Shaun Westcott. "We have also taken on feedback from customers, media, and, most importantly, the dealer network. The result is an enhanced model range and improved specification that we have been able to rapidly bring to market. The GLX-R has always represented great value for money, and this latest iteration has high visual appeal and true all-round capability," he added.

The 2024.5 model year Mitsubishi Triton range will reach nationwide Australian dealerships starting this month, and (RRP) pricing kicks off at AUD 43,690 (a little over $30k at the current exchange rate) for the 4x2 GLX grade with the 2.4-liter Bi-Turbo diesel engine. The 4x4 GLX-R starts from AUD 56,740 ($39k+) as it sits directly below GLS and GSR models that are AUD 59,090 and 63,840, respectively ($41k and $44k).
