Mitsubishi Triton unlikely to get an off-road performance variant for now
As much as Mitsubishi would like to sell a Ford Ranger Raptor-like off-road pickup truck, there’s no plan to make one currently. That’s according to James Tol, the company’s head of product planning in Australia.

Addressing the media at the facelifted Mitsubishi Triton's Australian launch, Tol, said: "There's certainly an opportunity there, but I'm not going to speculate as to whether we are or aren't planning (to launch a Ford Ranger Raptor rival)." All pickup top-guns, including Nissan and Toyota, have expressed an interest in introducing a Ford Ranger Raptor-like variant designed for the off-road enthusiast.

"At the moment we're concentrating on getting the model range we have bedded down and launched. I'd never say never... we will talk about that down the track."

The Mitsubishi Triton features a new design under the concept "Rock Solid" that brings noticeable aesthetic enhancements. The face incorporates the new-generation "Dynamic Shield" concept, which introduces the new brand-typical multi-tier front light set-up. The beefier-looking lamps, located higher up, give the one-tonne pickup a more powerful and imposing face.

A 6-speed automatic transmission has replaced the 5-speed automatic transmission with the facelift. Both Super-Select and Easy-Select 4WD systems now offer off-road modes (Gravel, Mud/Snow, Sand and Rock). When engaged, off-road mode integrally controls engine power, transmission and braking to regulate the amount of wheel slip. The Mitsubishi Triton is now safer thanks to the addition of Forward Collision Mitigation (FCM), Blind Spot Warning with Lane Change Assist (BSW with LCA), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), Ultrasonic Misacceleration Mitigation System (UMS) and around-view monitor.
