His coupling of a gearbox directly with a universal joint transmission replaced the far less efficient belts and chains in use at the time, and became an industry standard. From there it was strength to strength to strength, the French firm going large-scale industrial in the early 20th century, to making "everything with a motor" in the post-war period, and by 1955, it was working to export every other car it made.
