Road Safety: New Subject in Schools Next Year
In attempt to enhance the ability and skills of students, the government is envisaging to introduce road safety as a new subject in the school curriculum next year.

Road safety will not only provide a wider choice of subjects to the students but it will also help to raise awareness on the importance of safe driving from an early age.

The minister of Education Dr Vasant Bunwaree said that this new subject will enable the youths to familiarise themselves with the different road signs. He explained, “My ministry is currently working on the project of introducing this new subject in schools. The primary school students should have a basic knowledge of road safety, such as crossing, lights, use of pavement and other things they see around them daily.”

He highlighted that the subject will be compulsory for primary and lower secondary students. However, students wishing to opt for the subject at higher level will be free to do so.

“By the age students reach the age of 15, they will be ready to go for their oral test for driving before applying for a driving license,” he said.
