The race team turned road car producer is most famous for owner James Glickenhaus' Ferrari Enzo-based Pininfarina-designed P4/5 and the more recent SCG 003. Last fall, SCG announced the 004S, a three-seat sports car with a twin-turbo 5.0-liter V8. More recently, the company revealed plans to build a modern road-legal version of the Boot, a simple and rugged Baja-blasting off-roader that was raced by Steve McQueen back in '60s.
Glickenhaus purchased McQueen's Boot a few years back, adding a bit of variety to his Ferrari-heavy collection. The Boot was built in the '60s and was an amalgamation of GM parts and Hurst (shifters) fabrication. Info on the SCG Boot is scarce, with just a few renderings and some info sprinkled onto the company's social media site. The car isn't necessarily a looker, but there's something charming about the function over form design.
While much of it's still up in the air, SCG says the boot will be powered by a naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8, selectable four-wheel drive, 20 inches of suspension travel and even heating and air conditioning. Based on the renderings, there will be a four-door variant sometime down the line. A special volcano edition is meant to tackle the world altitude record. The current record is just shy of 22,000 feet at the Ojos Del Salado volcano in Atacama, Chile.
Like the SCG 004S, the Boot will be road legal under NHTSA's low-volume manufacturer provisions. This grants small automakers some leniency when it comes to regulations. SCG describes it as a mix of Baja and Dakar racers. SCG wants to have a vehicle on the road in either 2019 or 2020 at a price of around $100,000.
