Suzuki plans to expand its European lineup with the Baleno subcompact hatchback that will be sold as a slightly larger alternative to its Swift, the company's current top-selling model in the region.

The Baleno will go on sale next year and likely will be aimed at budget conscious buyers looking for a roomier and more practical alternative to the sportier Swift.

The Baleno combines "stylish design, a spacious interior and new technologies" such as the first application of the automaker's new downsized 1.0-liter direct-injection turbocharged gasoline engine, Suzuki said in a statement.

Suzuki said the five-door Baleno will debut as a production model at next month's Frankfurt auto show.

The hatchback is set to go on sale next summer and will compete in Europe’s biggest segment against rivals such as the Skoda Fabia, the Hyundai i20 and Kia Rio.

Suzuki first used the Baleno name with a subcompact hatchback built between 1995 and 2001.
