Tesla Model S P85D Unveiled with 691-HP; 0-100 km/h in 3.2 Secs

Unveiled today, a medium-sized, 188-hp motor sits behind the front axle in the new 60D and 85 D and is dialled up to 221 hp and 244 lb-ft in the range-topping P85 D. The same motor is added to the rear axle in the 60D and 85D, however the supercar-killing Models S P85D maintains the 470-hp motor in the back, giving it a combined output of 691 hp and 687 lb-ft of torque.

That translates to a 0-100 km/h  time of 3.2 seconds – a whole second quicker than the P85 – an 11.8-second quarter-mile, and 250 km/h top speed. On top of that, range has increased by 16 km to 442 km. Despite the front motor upping weight by 132 to 2,239 kg, there is now an even 50:50 weight distribution, allowing for 1 g of max acceleration. Apart from the badge and red brake calipers, the P85D offers no visual differences. The 60D and 85D both deliver a combined 376 hp and 362 lb-ft of torque, with 0-60 happening in 5.7 and 5.2 seconds respectively, topping out at 125 and 155 mph, and range improved to 225 and 295 miles.

As well as revealing the $120k Model S P85 D and $4,000 more expensive 85D and 60D, Tesla unveiled its semi-autonomous autopilot system. Using optical cameras and a 360-degree sonar, the car can sense road signs, barricades and traffic, automatically coming to a complete stop in line with cars ahead. Flick the turn signal, and the Model S will change lanes all by itself, while an electromechanical brake setup offers stunning flexibility. A fully autonomous car, says Musk, will be here in the next five to six years. All D models can be ordered now, with P85D deliveries to start before yearend.
