That’s precisely what Citroën has been up to on its Instagram profile as of late, because it is about to revive one of the most iconic nameplates in automotive history. We’re all aching to get a better look at it in Paris soon, but the close-ups posted by Citroën give us something of an indication of what to expect.
Citroën launched the original 2CV all the way back in 1948, intending to motorize rural France with a cheap, simple, and utilitarian car that stood out for its practicality. It came with front-wheel drive and a tiny flat-twin engine, displacing just 375 cc and good for up to nine horsepower. The 2CV became a huge success, with Citroën selling more than five million units before discontinuing it in 1990.
The French carmaker is now getting ready to relaunch its historic nameplate as an electric vehicle, made in the same spirit as the original. It’s not so much about emulating the classic legend visually, though, because Citroën’s primary focus is on the practical side of things. The idea is to serve a purpose similar to that of the old 2CV, catering to people’s need for affordable transportation.
But judging by the previews shared on Instagram, several cosmetic elements will also make their way onto the upcoming EV. The hood design, protruding headlights, and rounded bodywork caught our attention right away, then we’ve got those snazzy, retro-style wheels looking like a million bucks.
And, of course, it’s safe to say the electric 2CV will be orange, but Citroën will likely add more color options down the road. We’re starting to visualize what the new model might look like in our minds, and it may just turn out to be one of the most charming budget EVs out there. However, that remains to be seen at the Paris Motor Show a bit later this month.
