These Are The Best New Cars That Can Be Turned Into Tuned Monsters

While this may be true, turbochargers have made cars incredibly fast and even easier to make faster and get more power from their engines. So here's a list of the top five cars that become the most insane when someone plugs a laptop into them.

Tuners typically prefer cheap, turbocharged cars to Italian exotics because they can be just as fast for a fraction of the price. Why spend a fortune on a Ferrari, when a Toyota Supra could smoke it? We all watched 'Fast and Furious' right? Now that modern Ferraris have turbochargers, this is no longer the case. Vision Of Speed Performance took the 661 hp 488 GTB, and cranked the power up to 888 hp. This power comes from a 3.9-liter twin-turbo V8 and is close to that produced by the LaFerrari. With 910 lb-ft or torque, it is actually brawnier than Ferrari's flagship model. Unfortunately this car is still ludicrously expensive, so only very fortunate tuning-enthusiasts will be able to purchase one.

The next car on our list is also a beast as soon as it leaves the factory. The Mercedes S65 AMG produces 621 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque from a twin-turbo 6.0-liter V12. That may sound like plenty to most people, but there is quite a lot more power that can come from that V12. Brabus has been tuning fast Mercedes cars for years, and the Rocket 900 Coupe package for the S65 is one of the latest projects. The 6.0-liter V12 is upgraded to 6.3 liters and produces 900 hp and 1,106 lb-ft of torque. This can get the heavy car to 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds and on to a 217 mph top speed, enabling it to keep up with an Aventador. You may have a 1,000 hp Lancer, but we doubt it can match this level of comfort.

With a 707 hp 6.2-liter supercharged V8, the Dodge Charger Hellcat is already overkill for most people. However, if you absolutely have to have more, Hennessey has you covered. The supercharged setup is already potent, but Hennessey adds two turbochargers to the equation. This raised output to 1,032 hp and 987 lb-ft of torque. The added turbos help the Hellcat hit 60 mph in 2.7 seconds and pass through the quarter-mile in 9.9 seconds at 142 mph. With a new fuel pump, high-flow fuel injectors, a high-flow-air-to-water intercooler, dual turbo wastegates, and a number of modifications to the ECU, the Hellcat can become even more of a beast.

If you're looking for a relatively affordable car that is understated and extremely fast, the Golf R might be you best bet. The upcoming Focus RS may be getting a ton of attention, but the Golf R is still a tuner's dream. The 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo makes 292 hp with AWD. However we have seen a Golf R do some incredible things with a simple tune. A sixth-generation Golf R was able to run through the quarter-mile in just 10.65 seconds with a stage 3 tune. If you want to be able to beat a Ferrari or Lamborghini in a drag race, a Golf R is a great option. With a DSG transmission, the car is easy to drive and can achieve some blisteringly fast launches. The Golf R is very understated so no one will expect you to smoke them in a drag race.

Our final car may not come as much of a surprise. The Nissan GT-R is still a tuning monster. The 3.8-liter twin turbocharged V6 makes 600 horsepower in Nismo trim, but tuning it to over 1,000 has actually become quite common. With the Alpha 12+ pack, a GT-R can even keep up with a Porsche 918. This thing is still the tuning king.
