Toyota will hand off the cute S-FR concept to the folks at its motorsports arm, Gazoo Racing, for a race-ready makeover at the Tokyo Auto Salon from Jan. 15 through 17.

The original concept at October's Tokyo Motor Show imagined a rear-wheel drive sports car that looked like a modern update of the Toyota Sports 800 with a sprinkle of styling cues from an Austin-Healey Bugeye Sprite. Gazoo Racing rips away those adorable qualities to prepare it for the track. The S-FR Racing Concept now wears flared fenders that add about 1.6 inches to the stock width, and the hood boasts big vents. At the rear, the company mounts a massive wing and diffuser to keep the little droptop stuck to the road. To lower the center of gravity, Gazoo also slashes the roadster's height by about two inches from the earlier version.

Toyota doesn't provide any details about performance modifications, but you can spot drilled brake rotors through the wheels. It would be fun if the new hood signals a wild powerplant, too.
