Video Captures The Start Of A Massive Pile-Up On Canadian Highway
This video shows how quickly an accident can escalate in the snow.

As we've seen before, it's all-too easy for traffic accidents to happen when you combine snow with unattentive drivers. This amateur video is a harrowing reminder of how quickly a pile-up can escalate in these conditions. The massive pile-up occurred last week on Ontario's Highway 401 and involved nearly 100 vehicles. It all starts towards the end of the video. As traffic comes to a crawl, one driver fails to stop in time and skids across multiple lanes.

Things then escalate when a transport truck loses control, jackknifes and crashes into multiple stalled vehicles. Low visibility was to blame due to a snow band off Lake Ontario, as reported by CTV News, but it looks as if some cars were driving too fast to react and stop in time.

Some of the statements from drivers at the scene sound terrifying. "I saw the death in front of me. I thought, 'Okay I'm not going to make it,'" one driver said when a separate transport truck crushed the roof of their car. "It's going to be really bad and I'm not going to die in a nice way, it's going to be awful." "We were all scared and thanked god that we're all alive," another said. Miraculously, no one was killed in the multi-car crash, but some were taken to hospital to be treated for minor injuries.
