Volkswagen Celebrates The GTI's 40th Birthday the Only Way It Knows How
It's the fine wine of hot hatches; only gets better with age. Staying true to its word, Volkswagen has built a production version of its GTI Clubsport Concept, and the timing couldn’t be any better.

After all, it is the 40th anniversary of the GTI. Set to have its official debut next week at Frankfurt, VW claims the GTI Clubsport has an additional 35 horsepower over the standard GTI, making it good for a total of 265 hp from that familiar 2.0-liter turbo four banger.

This time, however, there’s an overboost function that lasts for about 10 seconds and increases output to more than 290 hp. 0-100 happens in 6.0 seconds with the standard six-speed manual, and 5.9 seconds when equipped with the optional DSG dual-clutch. Top speed is 250 km/h. The exterior has gained unique front and rear bumpers, side sills, an improved rear diffuser, special 18-inch alloy wheels (19-inchers are optional) and a multi-part roof spoiler. The Onyx White paint shown here will be offered as well as a few other colors that are paired with the black roof. Also note the black trim stripe on the sides that pay tribute to the original GT from 1976.

Drivers and passengers will be treated to racing bucket seats wrapped in Alcantara as well as unique trim stripes on the instrument panel, center console, and doors. The sport steering wheel is also covered in Alcantara and the GTI emblem. At 12 o’clock there’s red seam marking, while red seam stitching and stainless steel door sill plates round out the package. Details such as pricing and availability will come at a later date.
