Is VW looking to pick a fight with Subaru here?

It appears Volkswagen has a newfound interest in taking on Subaru, at least in Europe. Set to have its live debut at the Paris Motor Show this week is the VW Golf Alltrack. Consider it a Subaru XV Crosstrek rival of sorts. Based on the current Euro-spec Golf wagon, the Alltrack features a higher ground clearance thanks to a suspension that’s been raised by 0.75 inches, wheel arch moldings, and flared side sills that offer body protection. There’s also newly designed bumpers and various other exterior and interior bits.

Perhaps the most vital detail here is the standard 4Motion permanent all-wheel drive system. Several engines will be available, including the familiar 1.8-liter TSI with 178 horsepower. There’s also a 1.6-liter turbocharged diesel with 109 hp, and two 2.0-liter TDIs with either 148 hp or 182 hp. The TSI and top TDI come standard with a six-speed DSG gearbox while the other engines receive a six-speed manual. Official pricing hasn’t been announced but VW states UK sales will begin next summer.
