Chennai based BMW car plant released the 10000th car from its assembly line on November 23. The facility started its operations three years back on 29th March. The plant produced here its 3 Series and 5 Series sedans both in the petrol and the diesel versions. Now they are going to produce X1 compact SUV by the end of this year. The capacity of the car works is 5400 vehicles per annum on a single shift basis.

In 2011 BMW is going to increase the dealer network by setting up new outlets throughout the country. At present the company has 18 outlets in India; 4 more are to be opened next year. The company’s representatives expect that new outlets will afford up to 1200 jobs in the dealer and service network. BMW India has flourished and prospered in the Indian premium car market in rather short period of time and has sold cars in superb figures.

At the press conference Dr. Andreas Schaaf, President, BMW India said: “Having taken the lead in the premium segment for the first time last year, we aim to maintain our leading position in the Indian market by now embarking on the second wave of our India strategy. We are confident that we will be able to increase sales substantially over the coming years with exciting new products, now produced in India and the ongoing expansion of our dealer network to reach out to more of our potential buyers.” 

“I am convinced that our employees here at BMW Plant Chennai will make a great contribution in strengthening our company’s long-term success in India”, said Mr. Juergen Eder, Managing Director, BMW Plant Chennai. 

In the international market, the BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce brands belong to the BMW group. BMW and Rolls Royce are already present in India, MINI will soon be approaching. The company also produces bikes and will soon be introducing some of its two-wheeled models in the Indian market.
