The current Toyota Camry isn't a pretty car, but the 2018 model, at least from what we can glean from the most recent set of spy shots, shows a lot of promise.

The next-gen Camry was caught testing with a Highlander and Lexus RX and appears to be a high-performance variant of the sedan. We know it sounds crazy, but this could be a good-looking Camry.

Gone is the awkwardly designed, fish-like front fascia from the current Camry in favor of a sleeker, more angular design. The headlights are slimmer than the current sedan's, while a massive triangular grille dominates the rear part of the fascia with two smaller cutouts flanking either side.

The prototype is wearing sporty, multi-spoke wheels that are finished in black, suggesting a performance model. The side profile of the sedan isn't a vast departure from the current generation, but with a slightly more angular design.

The rear end of the Camry benefits from the same design changes on the front. The curvy rear end of the Camry has been ditched for a pointy design that is highlighted by jagged, boomerang-shaped taillights that are probably LED units. A slim spoiler sits atop of the trunk, while quad-exhaust tips place an emphasis on the model's sportiness.

Previous reports indicate that the next-gen Camry will receive some aluminum components, with the hood being a prime candidate for the lightweight material. The current model's engines should carry over with the addition of a new 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and an eight-speed automatic transmission to replace the current six-speed. We expect the next-gen sedan to be unveiled early next year.
