Ford Cobra Jet Mustang Blasts into SEMA
It's become a tradition of SEMA: the unveiling of Ford's latest Cobra Jet Mustang drag racer. And trust us, the 2016 edition doesn't disappoint.

Clad in blue, neon pink, and gray livery – with several prominent snakes – the 2016 Cobra Jet Mustang can run the quarter mile in eight seconds. Ford says about 75 percent of the 5.0-liter V8 engine components are shared with the Mustang GT, but the Cobra Jet still has many significant upgrades for the strip, including a Whipple supercharger. Ford Performance also fitted it with a solid axle rear suspension (See, it still has its uses!), drag-spec coilover shocks and springs, and racing brakes. The interior gets a roll cage, five-point harness, and Corbeau FIA seats.

The CJ also borrows an electric water pump from the C-Max hybrid that lets the engine cool without running. The Cobra Jet is mean, thanks to a little help from Ford's green parts bin.

Just 50 examples will be sold, in keeping with Ford's practice with previous Cobra Jets, and many are spoken for, says Ford Performance boss Dave Pericak. They have an MSRP of $99,990. Graphics and the wheelie bar are each $1,995 options. The Cobra Jet doesn't have a VIN and is sold a performance part. It's certified for NHRA Stock and Super Stock classes and other series.
