Ford Recommits To Cars With A Mondeo Facelift For China
Ford killed off its Mondeo midsize sedan in most markets back in 2022 – including ditching the similar Ford Fusion in America after the 2020 model year – but China isn't like most markets. There, the fifth-gen Mondeo is built by Changan Ford, a 50/50 joint venture between the Blue Oval and one of China's largest state-owned automakers.

And it seems as though the company is committed to building four-doors, because the 2026 Mondeo will receive a handful of updates to make it even more appealing to customers in the world's third-largest country.

Changes Inspired By The Mustang Family
The Mondeo's mid-cycle update includes a rather attractive front fascia with new headlights that are far more cohesive than the outgoing car's, which featured chunky, square LEDs for primary illumination and hook-shaped accents higher on the fenders. That odd look is gone, replaced with a sleeker, single-unit headlight design that integrates an appealing pixelated tri-bar motif that's equal parts Audi and Mustang for the daytime running lamps.

Between them is yet another evolution of the company's rounded hexagon grille shape also seen on the Escape, with chrome bits and bobs in the texture to keep things interesting. The rear bumper has also been reshaped with an edgy design that puts less of an emphasis on the previous car's faux tailpipes, conforming to a modern trend of hiding one's greenhouse gases under a bushel. New wheel designs round out the external alterations, but there's a lot more to appreciate once you open the appealingly contoured doors and step inside.

There, tech-obsessed consumers will find a massive 27-inch plinth of touchscreen infotainment system residing next to a 12.3-inch driver display, all running off upgraded processors and Ford's latest software to ensure crisp graphics and smooth operation. The automaker also endowed the 2026 Mondeo with a few physical controls, with a pair of clickwheels on the center stack providing redundant climate functions. The console design is also completely different and seemingly borrowed from the Mustang Mach-E, with an attractive floating armrest that incorporates a pair of wireless phone chargers, residing above open storage around the front passengers' knees.

Minimal Updates Under The Skin
Apart from the tweaked styling and interior, the Mondeo soldiers into 2026 with the same powertrain lineup as before: a pair of four-cylinder turbocharged engines under the EcoBoost branding and displacing either 1.5 liters or 2.0 liters, as well as a hybrid model. Power outputs are up a bit relative to the 2025 Mondeo, with the base engine going from 188 horsepower to 193 and the 2.0 EcoBoost rising from 250 hp to 257. We've reached out to Ford for clarification on the hybrid engine's powertrain – previously, it was a 1.5-liter four that made 205 hp, but it's being reported that the new hybrid is 79 ponies stronger, suggesting the electrified powertrain may now use the 2.0-liter as its base.

It's worth noting that Ford offers only a few sedans worldwide nowadays, including the Chinese-market Mondeo and its all-but-identical twin, the Taurus that's sold in the Middle East – repurposing a name that hasn't been offered stateside in more than half a decade. We presume the Taurus will get the same styling and technological updates as its Chinese sibling, although its powertrain may be tailored to local tastes.
