Holcim highlights road safety issue

Promoting road safety and increasing truck drivers’ awareness is the objective of cement company Holcim (Mauritius) Ltd. The company organised an road safety awareness day, in collaboration with the police.
Entitled Safety First, the awareness session led by sergeant Barlen Munusami of the Road Safety Unit of the Mauritius Police Force was intended for 25 truck drivers who work with Holcim (Mauritius) and deliver cement in bulk across the island. These carriers were sensitised on the preventive actions to consider before taking to the road. They were also told to respect safety standards while delivering heavy products.
According to Holcim Ltd, road accidents are becoming increasingly fatal, especially involving heavy trucks, and it is important to educate drivers to ensure that safety remains a priority. The various topics raised on this day included study and risk of accidents, causes of accidents and prevention techniques. Holcim (Mauritius) Ltd aims to promote a culture of prevention and road safety and also of compliance with maximum load. The managing director of the company, Alexander Jeker, stressed that through this activity, Holcim has again demonstrated its commitment to safety.
Safety First is a programme that the company has put in place to educate employees and other subcontractors on the health, safety and risks and causes of road accidents caused due to speeding and alcohol.Jeker said, “It will also allow remind our employees about the importance of good and responsible conduct. It is also an opportunity to review the new codes of the road, which have come into effect. We invite other companies to implement this type of initiative to help reduce the number of road accidents.”
