Mazda Is 'Trekking' Into Subaru's Domain With A New Off-Road Adventure
For a long time, Subaru has cornered the light off-road market – meaning regular-size passenger vehicles with all-wheel drive that can get people to the start of their outdoor pursuit. Then COVID-19 happened, and a lot of people rediscovered the great outdoors.

While many automakers now have soft-road versions of crossovers, Mazda has committed to competing with Subaru by making all-wheel-drive standard on its crossovers and with its off-road leaning Mazda CX-50 model. And now, the company has embarked on a sponsorship to help bolster its off-road aspirations.

Off-Road Racing On Two Wheels

No, Mazda isn't pushing some kind of aggressive stunt driving with its SUVs. The Japanese brand has partnered with Trek, a notable bicycle manufacturer, and is sponsoring its off-road cycling teams. Considering how often we see bike racks on SUVs, it seems like a pretty good fit for a brand such as Mazda, looking to expand their off-road image.

Trek started out in 1976 in Wisconsin making high-end touring bikes, and among its accolades is that Lance Armstrong won seven consecutive Tours de France events on Trek bikes. Trek builds all sorts of competition bikes as well as high-end hobby bikes, and works hard to promote cycling as a form of regular transport as well as for recreation and sport. In this case, though, Mazda is now the official exclusive automotive partner of Trek's off-road race teams.

"Movement has always been at the heart of the Mazda brand, not simply to get from one place to another, but as a way to enrich our lives. Trek shares that belief, making this partnership a natural fit. Together, we'll support the incredible athletes and communities that make off-road cycling such an inspiring expression of adventure and human potential."
- Brad Audet, Chief Marketing Officer, Mazda North American Operations.

Specifically, the partnership will support the Trek-Unbroken XC and DH mountain bike teams, and the Trek Driftless gravel program. And since being a sponsor has all kinds of perks, expect some kind of Mazda presence at Trek events. According to the press release, "Trek and MNAO make products that help people explore new places, spend more time outside, and create memorable experiences along the way. Whether it's taking on a favorite back road or driving to the next trail ride, both brands are united by a love of adventure."

Will This Lead To A New Special-Edition Mazda SUV?

As part of the deal, Mazda will supply outdoor-adventure-ready CX-50 models. Judging by the single image Mazda released, it's a premium trim CX-50 with decals, a cargo box mounted on the roof, and a rear-mounted bike rack. From our experience with the CX-50, it's certainly capable of dealing with "remote locales where conditions are unpredictable," provided a set of suitable tires are installed.
