New Free-Breathing Mazdaspeed 3 is Coming
Mazda to ditch the turbos for the next-generation Mazdaspeed 3.

After unveiling the new-generation Mazda 3 in both hatchback and sedan form, we were left speculating whether a Mazdaspeed variant was in the works. Well, apparently it is. According to UK publication Auto Express, Mazda is not only bringing back the popular hot hatch, known across the pond as the MPS, it’s also reviving the high-revving naturally aspirated engine. So look out Ford Focus ST and VW GTI. Using its clever Skyactiv technology, Mazda will manage to circumvent strict emission regulations by improving fuel efficiency.

Power will come from the 3’s 2.0-liter unit cranked up to 200 hp and 7,000rpm, which should result in a sub-seven 0-62 mph sprint time. While not as impressive as its 263-hp 2.3-liter turbocharged predecessor, with improved handling and agility coupled with its high-revving, free-breathing nature, the Mazdaspeed 3’s forced induction rivals will have a serious contender.
