Significant deployment of the size of the Traffic Branch , supported by the regular police in each division during the last weekend for a punch operation. Figures compiled for central Barracks following these major operations indicate that 50 drivers have tested positive for alcohol test and 1,161 others were flashed for speeding .
The information available from the Traffic Branch officials indicate that about 5,000 vehicles were checked between Friday afternoon and Sunday evening.
The three main target areas for this police operation was the North, West and South. The first concern of the authorities is that despite awareness campaigns , motorists continue to recklessness on the roads. Figures from the exercise conducted during the weekend confirm this trend.In addition to the 50 motorists fined for excessive alcohol , 37 were also tested positive while remaining below the authorized rate. Those above this threshold are subject to a fine of Rs 10,000 , the disqualification of the license for a period of eight months or even imprisonment.
Another important figure of the weekend : the number of motorists flashed for speeding . Those singled out by the cameras are fixed to the number of 1123 while 38 were caught by Lidar (note: mobile radars) . On the other hand , 216 motorists were fined for various offenses.The side of the Traffic Branch , one welcomes the past two weekends, where such operations were held on the main roads , no fatal accidents were recorded. Such punch operations should be conducted daily but with more troops deployed during the weekend to contain the number of deaths on the road. In fact , studies conducted by the Traffic Branch tend to confirm that the highest number of fatal accidents occur between Friday and Sunday .
Of the 100 fatal accidents since the beginning of the year, 24 were recorded on Saturday , 19 on Sunday and 15 on Friday . At yesterday , 116 victims were recorded on our roads compared to 112 last year.
