Projects to decongest roads at the entrance of Port Louis have been initiated by the Road Development Authority (RDA).

In the first instance, the RDA has already authorised permission for the construction of a third lane along the New Trunk Road (NTR) towards Port Louis at the cost of Rs 74 million.

The third lane will start from the ‘Kovil’ located next to the Caudan overpass and will extend towards Port Louis.

Aiming at the decongestion of ‘La Place d’Armes,’ this lane which will be further extended to the Blue Penny Postal Museum in Port Louis and will be used by road users going towards the north of the island. Sources from the RDA stated that the project also consists of a bridge and construction works should last for about ten months.

The second phase of the project is expected to be initiated as soon as next year.

Through these projects, the government hopes to highlight its commitment to modernising road infrastructures on the Island. It has already invested a total of Rs 62 billion in infrastructure since being elected in 2005.

Government has this year almost doubled its budgetary allocation for the road infrastructure overhaul projects, planning for an allocation of about Rs 4.3 billion and the Ministry hopes to be able to increase the budget further to Rs 11 billion in 2014.
