Formula One icon Michael Schumacher Suffers 'Relatively Serious' Head Injury in Skiing Accident
Formula One icon Michael Schumacher suffered a “relatively serious” injury to his head while skiing in the French Alps on Sunday morning.

He was transported to a nearby trauma hospital, according to the French Radio station RMC.

Schumacher, one of the greatest race car drivers of all time and seven time Formula One world champion, retired from the sport last year for the second time. The outlet reports he was skiing in the French resort of Meribel where the 44 year-old owns a chalet when he suffered a head injury, the outlet reports.

The status of his injury has yet to be announced but he was wearing a helmet when he fell and hit a rock. The legendary driver and ski enthusiast was conscious when taken to Grenoble Hospital, according to RMC.

The hospital's director declined comment on his condition but said they would hold a press conference this afternoon, RMC reported.

The French Mountain Gendarmerie said Schumacher sustained a “relatively serious” head injury.

Schumacher’s manager Sabine Kehm said the retired driver was on a private skiing trip and “fell on his head.”

“We ask for understanding that we cannot give running updates on his condition. He wore a helmet and was not alone,” Kehm said, without giving further details.

Christophe Gernignon-Lecomte, director general of Meribel ski resort, told the radio station Schumacher was “shocked, a little shaken but conscious.”

The gendarmerie said the accident occurred while he was skiing on a trail.

Schumacher is a married father of two who currently lives in Switzerland, according to his website. In his career he has 91 total victories and 155 podium finishes in 308 Grand Prix races.
