Acquisition of 'Smoke Meters': Polluting Vehicles Screened
The police force and the Ministry of Environment launched on Monday, putting into operation new opacimeters (smoke meters) to assess the density of the smoke emanating from the exhaust pipes.

On this occasion, the Minister of the Environment, Virashawmy Deva, will assist in this exercise to be held on the highway.

The devices in question are intended to better control the fumes emitted by vehicles and allow to punish polluting vehicles. Fines are in effect provided for vehicles that emit more smoke than the rate allowed.

These opacimeters arrived in Mauritius is more than a month. However, these instruments had not been used until now for lack of police training. Several of these have, for this purpose, was sent on missions abroad to obtain appropriate training on the subject. When they return, they have, in turn, trained other police officers so that they can use these devices. Many of these devices are in operation from Monday. One of them was also sent to Rodrigues.
