'Doom' Comes To Indianapolis Motor Speedway
The "Doom" video game series has always been fast — Doomguy himself has been calculated to run nearly 60 miles per hour — but rarely this fast: the No.

7 IndyCar driven by Mikhail Aleshin will sport a livery based on the new game throughout the month of May.

The paint scheme was officially unveiled by Schmidt Peterson Motorsports and game publisher Bethesda Softworks this morning at Indianapolis Motor Speedway before the car hit the track for today's practice for the Angie's List Grand Prix of Indianapolis. The "Doom" livery will make its race debut with Saturday's GP and then continue through practice, qualifying and — bumping willing — the Indy 500 itself.

We feel these types of partnerships are absolutely critical to creating the next generation of fans for the Verizon IndyCar Series," said SPM Racing team owner Sam Schmidt in a statement. "This sport is all about speed, innovation and technology, so gaming seems to be a natural fit."

Once again developed by id Software, "Doom" is the fourth in the long-running series that popularized the first-person shooter genre. While other FPS games came before it, including id's own "Wolfenstein 3D*," the original 1993 "Doom" really blew the roof off and became the template for much of what has come the past 23 years. There is a reason "'Doom' clone" became a viable description in the '90s and '00s. Even today, the original and its '94 sequel — both playable on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360/One — are a blast despite the dated graphics and inability to jump or aim up or down.

"Doom" (2016) is coming out tomorrow on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. As befitting its lineage, the game is gloriously rated M for violence, gore, mayhem and violence. ("You said 'violence' twice." "I like violence.")
